Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee has been chief minister of West Bengal for over 10 years and before that he occupied important ministeriat berths in Jyoti Basu’s Cabinet for over two decades and yet he does not own any movable or immovable assets but Sovan Chatterjee, who had been mayor of Kolkata for one year and was a councillor in the Kolkata Municipal Corporation for the past few years, owns assets worth `5 crore jointly with his wife.

Over 24,000 booths marked as sensitive will have a four-layer security cover during the coming Assembly polls in West Bengal.
“Of the 70,126 booths in the state, 24,000 have been declared sensitive. Special arrangements have been made for security in these booths,” additional chief electoral officer N.K. Sahana told reporters here on Thursday.

“Fearing defeat at the hustings, the CPI(M) has been creating terror in the state. My appeal to all Trinamul workers is to maintain cool and lodge protest politically,” Ms Banerjee said in an SMS message.

She waves at the crowds, shakes hands with the people and greets them either with a namaskar or an adab — depending on whether she is traversing a Hindu or a Muslim majority area.

With Mamata Banerjee’s “padayatras” drawing thousands, the ruling CPI-M not to be outdone has also planned a similar roadshow on coming Saturday by chief minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee in his Jadavpur constituency in the city’s southern part.

West Bengal chief minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee does not own a house or a car and he stays in a rented government flat and has just `5,000 cash in hand.
Bhattacharjee, who is the CPI(M) candidate for Jadavpore assembly constituency, said in his affidavit filed with the Election Commission that his income for the year 2009-10 was `1,00,920.
