Kolkatans had their first taste of waterlogging this monsoon when a number of city roads were submerged following a 90-minute downpour on Monday morning. From south to north, streets after streets remained waterlogged even hours after the rains stopped. “This was the first test of the Trinamul Congress-controlled new civic board at the Kolkata Municipal Corporation. Sadly it failed in it,” said Tarun Sarkar, a shopkeeper in Hazra.
New bill to deal with khap members too
Alarmed by the steep rise in suspected honour killings, the Central government has decided to bring a new bill providing for the prosecution of the entire khap panchayat for ordering violent punishment for young couples marrying against their diktats, a senior minister said on Sunday. The Central government will soon come out with a law against honour killings and a draft has already been prepared, law and justice minister M. Veerappa Moily said on Sunday.

Maoist, jawan die in Bengal encounter
A Maoist and a jawan of the state armed police (SAP) were killed in a violent encounter between the rebels and the joint security forces which lasted over six hours in Jhargram in West Midnapore on Sunday. The body of the rebel was recovered. At least two more rebels may have been critically injured in the encounter, the police said.

Ironically, this major haul of narcotics was seized on a day which is observed as the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking. KMC to upgrade maternity homes
Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) will upgrade its four maternity homes in the city. According to MMIC health Atin Ghosh, these homes lack basic infrastructure like surgical instruments and a properly-run operation theatre. They also do not have adequate staff.
