Zoo zooms in on green cover

With many trees in the Delhi Zoo decaying, authorities have come up with a new plan to keep the green cover intact. Zoo officials have conducted a survey of the flora, and decided that new trees must replace decaying ones. The future plan of action also includes re-introducing the concept of dividing the zoo into four zones — African, American, Asian and Australian — placing the flora and fauna accordingly. While the move is appreciated, experts feel other steps need to be taken in order to rope in youngsters to take up the cause of animal rights.

Chemists to protest against OTC ban

August 1 may turn into a bad day for patients as chemists plan to shut shop to protest against a government order to make prescriptions compulsory for the sale of 74 listed antibiotics. The strike is against the government decision to replace Schedule H by Schedule Hx in the Drugs and Cosmetics Act-1940. Also the chemists are required to keep a record of the prescriptions for the next financial year.

Lesbian couple trigger debate on gay marriage

Although same-sex marriages are legal in some parts of the world, in India, they invite death threats. Two women Savita, 25 and Veena, 20, tied the knot in Gurgaon court on July 22, but the move invited the wrath of their native villagers, who threatened to kill them. Fearing for their lives, the two have approached the judiciary for protection, and filed a petition in this regard.

Recreational facilities for ‘potential criminals’

According to the Delhi Police, 90 per cent of street crimes in the Capital are committed by youngsters from underprivileged backgrounds. With an aim to turn the attention of these youngsters towards more constructive activities, such as sports, Delhi Police has launched an interesting community-policing project. It has written to several civic agencies, recommending setting up of parks and playgrounds and train “potential criminals” in sports.
