Councillor’s threat worries civic activists
A ruling AIADMK councillor in Maduravoyil has been allegedly terrorising civic activists in the locality who have been protesting against poor roads and garbage mounds.
Two days ago, residents of Maduravoyil staged a novel protest highlighting the slushy interior roads by planting crops.
Next day, the city corporation filled the potholes with debris.
However, what came later was shocking.
The local zonal chairman of the corporation, K. Sekar, has allegedly threatened the persons who led the protest.
“The chairman called me on my phone and used abusive language and ended the conversation by threatening me with dire consequences.
Our celebrations stopped as we are worried about the behaviour of the ward representative,” alleged Arthur Robert, convenor, Joint Action Committee of Maduravoyil Residents Welfare Association.
Sekar said that a few members of association belonged to other political parties and were trying to gain political mileage.
The demonstrators have not complained about the slushy roads with the local councillor or the chairman, but wanted publicity and went ahead with the protest.
“The allegations against me are baseless and the motive of the demonstrators is to defame the local body and the government.
They wanted the ongoing metro water drainage work to be suspended as their streets were becoming slushy. But considering the benefit of the entire Maduravoyil we could not stall the project,” Sekar said.
A highly placed source at Ripon Buildings said that the locality has been earmarked for relaying of roads.
With rains playing havoc, debris was used to fill the potholes and new roads will be laid once the monsoon ends, said the officials.
