Lake path to get makeover for visitors
With more visitors thronging Arignar Anna zoological park, the zoo authorities are now restoring and renovating the approach road to Otteri lake, located inside the zoo.
Post-monsoon, the lake attracts a large number of migratory birds and, hence, can be an ideal spot to view birds at close quarters. So, a bird’s viewpoint is being built to encourage bird watching and more public amenities will come up at the zoo, zoo director and chief conservator of forests K.S.V.P. Reddy has said.
Animals acquired under the animal exchange programme and animal offspring born under the zoo-breeding programme continue to be an instant hit. Visitors are spending more time at the enclosures housing young ones and the latest attractions.
They enquire about the feeding habits and general characteristics of the wild inmates. The latest attraction to the zoo is the critically endangered leopard cat.
The public response to the zoo of late is encouraging and the footfall has been steadily growing by 10-15 per cent, per annum, Mr Reddy added.
Commenting about the successful captive animal breeding programme, a senior ranger said several species, including white tiger, lion-tailed macaque, Nilgiri langur, wild dog, Indian gaur, ostrich and rare deer have responded well to the zoo breeding programme with healthy offspring.
For the first time in the country, the zoo has bred ostrich without incubators and the hatchlings are doing fine, he said, adding that the need of the hour was more staff to improve the zoo and its maintenance.
