Postures, political & apolitical

Assembly elections in five states — Punjab, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Goa and Manipur — are round the corner and our attention will be claimed by these electoral battles. But can we ignore the global economic crisis unfolding over the

All aboard for UP elections

The Winter Session of Parliament is approaching and I sincerely hope that apart from politics, the objective of this session will be conciliation, rather than confrontation.

Collateral damage

We had a happy Diwali overall with the festive season lit up with a 5-0 win against England in the ODI series. I must say it was a one-sided series and offered very little to the spectator — it was sad to see Eden Gardens empty. This

Can Anna’s wisdom fill the cracks?

I had written last week that it was a serious error for Team Anna to single out and target the Congress during the Hisar byelection and that few would attribute the defeat of the Congress to Anna Hazare.
The result of the Haryana byelection was on expected lines and all three parties in the fray had put their best foot forward. Two important trends emerge out of this contest and a new alliance between Kuldeep Bishnoi and the BJP will pose a challenge to the Congress and the INLD. The BSP will also try to get a foothold in Haryana.

Anna’s fight takes political flight

As the Winter Session of Parliament draws close, we already have an extremely chaotic situation vis-a-vis the Lokpal Bill and this has been generated by none other than social activist Anna Hazare and his team. At a stage where the Lokpal Bill is with the Standing Committee of Parliament, what is the necessity for Team Anna to target the Congress alone?

Too many problems, too little time

We are in the midst of a global financial crisis though it looks insignificant compared to the daily chaos on the home political front. In public perception, the UPA government is in the dock for food inflation, which continues unchecked, while scams tumbling out of the Congress closet. The UPA may take comfort in the TINA factor and the fact that 2014 is two years away, but signs of the ground slipping away from under the UPA’s feet are unmistakable.

Politics, accidents & early polls

Political accidents cannot be predicted and as I have often said, no one can tell where they may come from. The reins of governance are slipping from the hands of UPA leaders so it is good that Congress president Sonia Gandhi is well and fully involved in seeking a solution to the party’s internal issues.

Game of politics just got harder

The Karnataka Lokayukta, Justice Shivraj Patil, has resigned in the wake of a real estate controversy. Justice Patil, who owns multiple properties in Bengaluru, is alleged to have violated rules in buying them. Ironically, it is the office of the Lokayukta that is required to probe land scams.
The resignation, nevertheless, is a welcome step. Clearly, public accountability is beginning to take effect and, hopefully, the former Supreme Court judge will return the plots of land if any rules were indeed violated to acquire them.

Pride and politics

Apart from the thrashing we received from England in the ODI series, this past week has been relatively peaceful. We have had some time to reflect on the “act now, think later” attitude of the men and women pushing the Jan Lokpal Bill as implementing it in its current form is sure to have very serious impact on our system of governance.

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
