Dhoni goes in style to wed Sakshi
India cricket captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni tied the knot with childhood friend Sakshi Singh Rawat on Sunday in a private ceremony near Dehra Dun, attended only by close relatives and few India teammates.
The wedding took place at the picturesque Vishranti Resorts, a farmhouse 40 kms outside the hill town, coming just a day after the two had got formally engaged.
Cricketers Suresh Raina, Ashish Nehra, R.P. Singh, Harbhajan Singh, Praveen Kumar and Piyush Chawla were present along with Bollywood star John Abraham and filmmaker Farah Khan to bless the couple. Close to 60 relatives from the families of both the bride and the groom were present at the rituals.
The marriage rituals began at around 8 pm when Dhoni, on horseback, along with the groom’s party walked for around half a kilometre to the bride’s location within the same resort. Dhoni wore a black sherwani while Sakshi was dressed in a white churidar-pyjama outfit.
The ceremony was an entirely private affair, with the media kept out of bounds.
Dhoni and Sakshi had studied at the same school, at DAV Jawahar Vidya Mandir in Ranchi, where both their fathers worked at Mecon. The Rawats moved to Dehra Dun after Sakshi’s father retired.
Sakshi, now 23, studied at Aurangabad’s Institute of Hotel Management and the two reportedly began dating two years back when Dhoni met her at the front desk of Kolkata’s Taj Bengal hotel.
The wedding date had earlier been set for October, but after news of the engagement became public on Saturday, the family decided to advance the ceremony. The couple plan to host a reception in Mumbai on July 7, which is Dhoni’s 29th birthday.
