VVS hails team’s fightback
Colombo, Aug. 7: In many ways, V.V.S. Laxman’s match-winning hundred here on Saturday symbolised his journey as an India cricketer. Always self-effacing off the field, his wristy artistry with the willow have so often served India well and it was typical that the man of the match stood in a corner applauding his mates who were basking in the warmth of the moment.
“I have also had doubts about my contribution to the team from the start of my career ,” Laxman said later with a smile. “But what matters really is how the dressing room feels.
“It’s unfortunate sometimes. Initially it was tough to play with that insecure feeling. I have always thought if given a free hand I would have probably got more runs. I think I have dealt it better in the recent past. By the grace of God I have played more that 100 Test matches which very few in India have done,” said Laxman.
It was a chanceless innings from Laxman and the ball hardly passed his bat. “That’s why he is called Very Very Special,” skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni said.
Laxman was also lavish in praise of coach Gary Kirsten and Dhoni for keeping team morale up. “Gary has been a huge influence. It’s been the best dressing room atmosphere in my career. He has been of great help both in technique and preparing mentally.
“Dhoni has been very good in handling success and has been calm. We play for each other, it’s like a family,” concluded Laxman.
A family to which, his contribution has been second to none.
