Man hangs self in police station

A 25-year-old man committed suicide at the Vijay Vihar police station in outer Delhi on Monday evening after he was allegedly assaulted by the cops. The incident took place on Monday at around 10 pm. The deceased has been identified as Vikas, a resident of Vijay Vihar. The police said Vikas was having an affair with a 30-year-old married woman, who lives in the same locality. “The woman’s husband, who was on an outstation trip, came back on Monday evening and found the two in a

compromising position. He started assaulting Vikas, who ran away and made a PCR call,” a police official said.
A team of police officials arrived at the residence and took Vikas and the woman’s husband to the police station where Vikas was allegedly assaulted by the cops. “He was severely thrashed by the cops who would not listen to his pleas. They used batons and kicked him severely,” Vimal Verma, a local reporter, who was present at the police station said.
In the meantime, the investigating officer of the case went to the woman’s residence to record her statement. When he came back, he found Vikas hanging from a window of the police station. “He had used his sweater to hang himself. No one was present in the room when the incident happened,” a police source said. A PCR van rushed Vikas to Ambedkar Hospital, where he was declared brought dead.
Deputy commissioner of police, Chhaya Sharma, was not available for her comments despite repeated attempts.
A senior police officer said, “Vikas was not beaten up. The reporter, who has made the statement, was called to the police station on his wife’s complaint. He is lying.” The post-mortem of the deceased will be conducted at the Sanjay Gandhi Memorial Hospital mortuary. The police has registered a case of suicide and no action has been initiated against the cops allegedly involved in the assault on Vikas.
