Monsoon in city by July 1st week
The hope that monsoon would keep its date with Delhi, as the capital had begun getting pre-monsoon showers a few days ago, has receded and the moisture-laden winds are likely to cover the city only in the first week of July. The usual date of onset of monsoon in Delhi is June 29.
Director of the Safdarjung Meteorological centre, B.P. Yadav, said that monsoon may take three to four days to reach Delhi. The variation, however, may not be much.
The delay is linked to the overall slowdown being observed in the advancement of monsoon, which is yet to cover the Gangetic plains of Uttar Pradesh. This region is normally covered by June 15.
Over the past few days, the weather has been fickle; oscillating between high levels of humidity and heat and spells of slight drizzles. On Monday, the maximum and minimum temperatures in the capital were recorded at 40 degrees Celsius and 28.1 degrees Celsius, respectively.
Meanwhile, speaking to the reporters on the sidelines of a function, chief minister Sheila Dikshit said that the preparations for the Commonwealth Games 2010 would not be affected by the approaching monsoon.
Ms Dikshit said that the government was aware of the fact that there will be rains. “But we have done a lot of work already and we will take up all the relevant issues,” she said, adding that fortunately rains in Delhi do not occur for more than a day or so. The chief minister further added that water and power supply would be managed well during Games.
Meanwhile, the city may soon get a stringent anti-touting law with the Delhi government drafting a bill to sternly deal with touts harassing and duping tourists. Delhi chief secretary Rakesh Mehta said the government is considering making the legislation to curb the rising cases of violence and harassment of tourists by the touts. Two Dutch women tourists were allegedly raped several times in last five months by two men posing as tourist guides.
