Pollution: Athletes to practise abroad
While the Delhi government is intensifying measures to check pollution in the city for the upcoming Commonwealth Games, some athletes from Canada and New Zealand have decided to train themselves in Singapore to avoid pollution. The athletes will be reaching Delhi just a day before the opening ceremony of the Games.
Meanwhile, a senior Delhi government official stated that the city government is very serious about pollution control and is doing its best. “However, if a few athletes decide to practise elsewhere, it is their wish,” the official added. The official further said that we are doing all possible things for the comfort of Games participants.
Delhi chief minister Sheila Dikshit had earlier said, “There will be an unprecedented increase in quantum of traffic during the Games. It will be in the fitness of things if number of vehicles coming from other states may be minimised at least during those days.”
The officials added that they are intensifying pollution check drives in Delhi and exhort people to go for regular pollution under control (PUC) checks. “The government had also suggested that all coal-based power stations be shut down during the duration of the Games,” said a Delhi government official. The official added that the government is doing the best and the athletes should understand our efforts.
Recently after a Cabinet meeting, the government also decided that timings would be strictly enforced for trucks plying in the city.

It is suprising how as Indians, we are expected to adjust to the poor quality of air standards as the government does not do anything about it.
It's nice to sit back and see them take action about it now that people from other countries are complaining. Thanks to them, we might now get slightly better quuality air for our lungs.
