Sheila asks agencies to work round the clock
Brace yourself for more trouble on the road and noise during the night as the civic agencies have been asked to go hammer and tongs on a 24x7 basis to finish various Games-related projects by the August 31 deadline. Delhi chief minister Sheila Dikshit on Friday asked all the agencies to begin working through the night to finish the
Games work before deadline. While issuing strict warnings that no deviation from the August 31 deadline would be allowed, she has also asked the civic agencies to inform the government by Saturday about the number of extra labour force they require to push the projects at full speed.
Ms Dikshit on Friday also met Cabinet secretary K.M. Chandrashekhar and reportedly apprised him of the measures being taken to expedite the projects.
Earlier, the Delhi government had written to the Delhi police asking for permission to the civic agencies to work through the night. The Delhi police, after assessing the situation, granted the approval this evening. Ms Dikshit stated: “A number of issues pending with Delhi police have been resolved. The police has agreed to permit execution of certain works during night time. It has also agreed to not come in the way of removal of construction debris.”
A senior government official, however, said that the actual work on a 24x7 basis would start only in about a week’s time as the agencies are expected to provide details of the extra labour to be deployed for the round-the-clock work for which necessary arrangements will have to be made. The entire process is likely to take around a week.
Ms Dikshit, meanwhile, has clarified that only the finishing work would be carried out in September. “There will be no deviation in deadlines for completion of work, last date of digging and removal of construction debris...they are going to stay,” said Ms Dikshit.
Apart from the work that is to be finished around the Games stadia, it is the task of street-scaping, installation of signages and other beautification exercises on the roads that is going to cause problems to the road users. Those living near the sports complexes may also have to face increased decibel levels during the night. Delhi police spokesperson Rajan Bhagat, however, said traffic personnel, along with marshals hired by private contractors, will be deployed on roads to ensure smooth traffic movement even as work goes on.
