Sheila gives PWD Aug. 31 deadline

As against the deadline of August 1, suggested by the group of ministers on Commonwealth Games on July 14, Delhi chief minister Sheila Dikshit asked the PWD engineers on Thursday to strictly follow the August 31 deadline. She also admitted that two crucial projects, Barapulla Nullah and the Ring Road bypass, were matters of

concern. Further, the greening exercise will be carried out in the month of September. PWD officials said that the Brapulla project can be completed only in August end. Sources said that the chief minister, while announcing a bonus of a month’s salary if the Games projects were successfully completed, also came down heavily on the engineers for the delays. PWD officials said that there were some complications in the Barapulla Nullah project — entailing 4-km elevated road from Games Village to Jawaharlal Nehru stadium — on its intersection with the railway lines at two places in Nizamuddin and near Mathura Road.
A senior PWD official said that more than 80 per cent of the work has been completed. But seemingly, not much progress has been made in the past couple of months as the PWD officials had maintained back in May that more than 80 per cent of the has been completed. “The work of the elevated road over the railway lines in Nizamuddin area is yet to be completed,” said the official, adding that shifting of utilities and a slum cluster earlier also led to the delay. The engineers have maintained that a project of this kind requires three years for completion, but they have been asked to complete it within 18 months, which was proving to be a problem.
Meanwhile, railway officials said that they have extended all possible support to the PWD but it appeared that the agency was not able to complete the work in time. The payment issues between the two agencies have also been resolved.

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.
