It is wonderful to see Indian sports emerging from the clutches of the game of cricket (much as I love the game) and heartening to note the role of corporate sector in promoting opportunities for talented footballers. However, the process of selection too needs to be fairer and equitable. At a recent audition in Delhi, 11 year olds were clubbed with 16 year olds to compete on the same turf and in the same game. Several of the younger ones feared to 'clash' with their elderly team mates on the field, and therefore could not perform to their potential. Such practices dampens the spirit of the young ones who would ride their passion at 11 year age into skillful performance in their mid-teens. This would not bode well for the emergence of the lovely game of football in this country.
