The DTH revolution is here!
The evolution of cable TV to direct-to-home TV (DTH) via satellite has created a mini revolution. DTH has slowly but surely encroached upon 25 per cent of the cable TV territory. Very soon, the DTH collection per subscriber will outbeat that of cable TV. DTH has changed the way of watching TV. You can now watch your favorites beamed directly to your smart phone.
DTH has benefitted TV viewers in several way. It gives them excellent picture quality and a better option, and has dented the monopoly of the cable operators and humbled them. The cable operators had taken TV viewers for granted and provided sub-standard transmission at exorbitant rates. DTH prompted them to go digital with the help of set-top boxes. And due to stiff competition from DTH they have enhanced their services and reduced their prices.
The DTH revolution attracted competitors like DD direct, Dish TV, Tata Sky, Big TV, Airtel, Sun TV, Videocon d2h. The competition is now cut throat. Each service provider, cable TV or DTH TV, is coming up with a new USP to out beat the other. HD (High definition) transmission and HD recorder is the new mantra. On the HD transmission front, Dish has taken the lead. Dish TV has launched 30HD channels to create an impact in the market. This is in reply to four or five HD channels of the other service providers and to their low priced HD recorders.
UNPLUGGED tip:
Those watching their HD LCD /LED TVs through normal set-top boxes should upgrade to HD boxes. Watching sports, movies and adventure channels in HD is a real treat. Why eat bland food when one can afford to spice it up!
