Low-end LCD’s win
For good picture effect it is quite essential to have a minimum 29”TV and presently one need not invest in an expensive LCD TV for good picture quality. Let us assure you that a conventional TV provides a better picture quality in terms of brightness and picture depth than the low-end LCD TV, it comes in the range of Rs 25-Rs 30,000.
Therefore, when going in for a HT system you could opt for a good branded new generation, slim and flat tube TV with the look of an LCD which would cost only Rs 15-17,000.
With fast-dropping prices and the miracle of high-tech enhancing the picture quality of LCD TVs and other large screen panels, an LCD TV with a reasonably good resolution may at a later stage be available at the price of a conventional TVs.
On the audio front, we have reasonably priced combo home-theatre systems introduced by popular AV companies like Sony, Philips, LG and Samsung, with excellent sound quality which are genuine 5.1 surround systems.
The combo systems from Sony, Philips and others come with 5.1 HT amplifier and a built in DVD player. The entire audio setup along with six speakers and one sub-woofer come in a reasonable range of Rs 10-15,000.
Now with an investment of roughly Rs 25-30,000 for the above configuration including TV, you can experience real cool audiovisual effects of a theatre in the comfort of you home.
Reader’s Query
How long will the DVD player be around? Is it worthwhile investing in a DVD player for watching movies on my home theatre system or should I opt for the newer digital video players in which we can download content from the Net and play it on my system?

Columnist response
It will take a while for the DVD player to be ousted. Yes, with the introduction of broadband Internet services and Wi-Fi services being available at reasonable prices and with super speeds allowing you to download an entire movie in a couple of minutes, the day is not far when pay movies on the Net will be easily available for a song. The satellite pay channels on decoder allows you to watch the latest blockbuster movie for the entire day at a cost of Rs 75 and lower are also sounding a death knell for the DVD player.
With new movie portals being developed exclusively for 3G smart phone use the DVD format may ultimately bid adieu to the AV world. However, presently a DVD player is your best bet.
