What’s in the cards!

The present year in the AV world has been the year of LCD-LED TVs. The major players are Sony, Samsung and LG along with the late starters — Panasonic, Sharp and Vu SONIC. The 2010 high-tech race has seen the plasma TV fading out, Sony pipping the winning post, LG and Samsung coming a close second,Vu SONIC galloping in from the outside with Sharp and Panasonic slowly moving in. CRT-based conventional TV sets are gradually fading into oblivion,

Now let’s take a peek into the future. Year 2011will see high-definition (HD) video products peaking. Now that movie and travel channels have migrated to HD, others too are all set for the transition. CRT TVs are on their way out; hopefully TV channels will switch over to the 16:9 ratio.
IPTV will make a desperate attempt for a comeback and surround sound will be a common feature in audio products. Effective advertisement campaigns and selective product marketing will be the order of the day and a hi-tech approach will rule the roost. Speed and memory chips will zoom ahead and virtual reality products and smartphones will take over the AV world. Laptops will move from the lap to the palm and e-netbooks and tablets will be key computing aids. Tablets are real slim and smaller versions of the netbook with 10-inch touch screens basically promoted as e-books. In the near future, they will come in with multi features like high-speed browsing, multimedia, larger memories, and telephony capabilities The super success of the Apple iPad is the clarion call to ‘me too apples’ and heavy competition in the coming year will plummet the prices of e-books and tablets.
High resolution and 3D devices with affordable pricing will surface rapidly. Most mid-range mobile phones will come with four to 12 megapixel built-in cameras having digital video filming function, making digital tapeless recording a common trend. TV on mobile and digital theatres will take rapid strides. LED TV prices will move south. The gaming industry will focus more on 3D games and 3D kits to enhance three dimensional viewing in various products. With so many advances in the pipeline, let’s all get set to welcome the changes that 2011 will bring.

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
