Congress president Sonia Gandhi on Tuesday approved the list of party candidates for the forthcoming bypolls to 18 Assembly and Nellore Lok Sabha seats, after a second round of discussions with Chief Minister N. Kiran Kumar Reddy and PCC chief Botsa Satyanarayana. There are no surprises in the list of nominees as all the names have been in circulation for a while now.

Mrs Gandhi had a brief meeting with the Chief Minister and PCC chief together and later met the two leaders separately. Unless there are some last minute changes, the overall list appears to be the choice of both the CM and the PCC Chief. The selection of Samma Rao for the Parkal constituency was done at the behest of PCC Chief Botsa Satyanarayana. Mr Rao, originally from the Congress, had joined the Telugu Desam only to return to the Congress fold on Tuesday.

Though the CM favoured Gandra Jyothi, wife of Government Chief Whip Gandra Venkata Ramana Reddy, he was left with no choice but to support Mr Rao’s candidature. There was confusion regarding other names. Earlier in the evening Rajya Sabha member J.D. Seelam was summoned to 10, Janapath, as a possible candidate to contest from Prattipadu Assembly segment in view of reports from party circles that he had more chances of winning than the former Youth Congress president T.J.R. Sudhakar Babu.

The candidature of Sudhakar Babu, a Christian, ran into trouble as the Prattipadu seat is reserved for SCs. But, Mr Babu, belonging to the Mala Christian community, informed the party leadership that he is eligible to contest. Meanwhile, the party has decided to keep a dummy candidate ready in case his nomination is found invalid on scrutiny. Later, Mr Ghulam Nabi Azad informed Mr Seelam that he was likely to be appointed to the state level monitoring committee to be set up shortly by the AICC to oversee the bypoll strategy and implementation.

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
