Cop apologises, DGP orders probe
Taking serious note of Wednesday’s incident, in which a superintendent of police was abducted by a head constable, DGP V. Dinesh Reddy has ordered an inquiry into the matter. On Thursday, the DGP appointed Subba Rao, the assistant inspector-general (admin), as the inquiry officer. On Wednesday, head constable Giriprasad Sharma had locked the SP inside a shop at Adarsh Nagar and had threatened to kill him. He then went to the DGP and reportedly apologised for the act.
Sharma claimed he had explained about the irregularities and corruption in the department. He said the DGP had assured him to resolve the issues and had even offered him a new post in the DGP office. “Earlier too, I had approached higher officials with my grievances, but they didn’t take any action and I was suspended. I was frustrated and angry, as I was not getting salary since the last seven months. So I took the SP hostage,” Sharma said, after he came out of the DGP’s office. “I was suspended by ASP Vijay Kumar without any reason seven months ago,” he added. Sharma claimed that the SP had forgiven him and the DGP too had assured him that no case will be booked.
However, on a complaint lodged by SP E. Lakshmi Narayana, the police has booked cases against the head constable for kidnapping and harming a public servant under IPC Sections 365 (kidnap), 189 (harming public servant), and 506 (criminal intimidation), police said. The incident, which exposed the poor security provided to higher officials, raised many eyebrows in the department. It also embarrassed the police department as the crime took place near its headquarters.
