Rs 30 crore funds for six constituencies

The state government on Saturday issued orders sanctioning nearly Rs 30 crore to six Assembly constituencies, where byelections are to be held soon. The development assumed significance against the backdrop of the GOs being issued on a public holiday.

The government had declared a public holiday on Saturday for Ambedkar Jayanti. Besides, it was also a second Saturday, a holiday. Orders, sanctioning Rs 4.44 crore for Rayachoti, Rs 6.51 crore for Ongole, Rs 4.20 crore for Narsapuram, Rs 5 crore for Parkal, Rs 3.51 crore for Payakaraopet and Rs 6 crore for Rayadurg Assembly constituencies, were issued by the planning department. The funds were released for various development activities under the scheme ‘Special Development Fund for Welfare and Developmental Activities.’

Decision on bypoll dates in 10 days
The Election Commis-sion will take a decision on holding bypolls to vacant Assembly and Lok Sabha seats before the Presidential polls within the next 10 days. Election Commissioner Hari Shanker Brahma on Saturday said in New Delhi that “the EC will take a view soon whether to hold bypolls to vacant seats across the country before or after the Presidential polls.”

Mr Brahma said that the EC would take the decision within the next 10 days and rubbished reports that bypolls to vacant segments cannot be held simultaneously with local body polls. “There is no such rule or law, the EC is empowered to hold elections regardless of local body polls,” Mr Brahma said, adding that there was no hard and fast rule of completing all the polls before Presidential poll. “We will get details on the exact number of vacancies for the Assembly and Lok Sabha seats and take a view on the bypolls,” he said. CEC S.Y. Qureshi had said recently that it was most likely bypolls to all vacant seats might be held before the Presidential election.

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
