YSRC leader held for firing victory shots
In typical Bihari style, YSR Congress leader H.A. Rahman opened fire in the air as a jubilant crowd hoisted him on their shoulders in front of the YSR party office at Lotus Pond in Jubilee Hills on Friday.
Police arrested Rahman, who is also a former MLC and minority cell convenor of the YSRC party, for violation of the Arms Act.
He was sent to judicial remand in Chanchalguda jail. The YSR Congress served a showcause notice on him for his ‘disorderly’ behavior, questioning why action should not be initiated against him.
50-year-old Rahman used his licensed revolver to fire five rounds in the air in front of a huge crowd. This was telecast live on TV channels. The west zone police intends to write to the commissioner to cancel his gun license, which he had obtained in 2001 citing a threat from the TRS.
Rahman, who initially said he opened fire out of joy after TD lost in the bypolls, changed his story after he realised the seriousness of his offence, saying party workers lifted him up and he tried to stop his gun from falling, which caused the shot.
