‘Don’t defend tainted Assam ministers’
Assam governor J.B. Patnaik’s meeting with Union home minister P. Chidambaram in connection with the multi-crore scam of North Cachar Hills has created a furore in the state’s political circle with the Opposition accusing the ruling party of defending the tainted ministers and ignoring the office of the governor.
Mr Patnaik had a meeting with Mr Chidambram on Thursday in New Delhi to brief him about the scenario arising out of a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe into the financial scam of NC Hills district. The Opposition also raised the issue in the Assam Assembly.
However, the parliamentary affairs minister denied having any information in this regard.
The meeting of the Assam governor is also significant in view of the arrest of Dimasa rebel leader Niranjan Hojai and his confession before the National Investigation Agency, indicating his nexus with the state’s political leaders who facilitated his escape from the state.
