Air India plans to build primary hub
Amazed passengers entered the glittering new integrated Terminal-3 at New Delhi’s IGI Airport for the first time ever on Wednesday even as Air India announced that it plans to build a “primary hub” at Delhi airport to “connect India with the world”.
“The launch of T-3 provides Air India an opportunity to be the first mover to develop a formidable primary hub, from which it will be able to connect India to the world,” Air India CMD Arvind Jadhav announced on Wednesday at T-3 as the first commercial aircraft — an Air India flight from New York — landed at Delhi and its passengers disembarked at T-3. The passengers were greeted with bouquets and a traditional Indian welcome.

Welcome bouquets are fine

Welcome bouquets are fine initially but how professional the airport staff is over a period of time is what sets countries like Singapore, Malayasia etc apart. The staff is courteous, patient and diplomatic while handling arriving visitors.
In most international airports in India we see grumpy, rude ground staff treating overseas visitors with disdain. For them it is just a job and no extra effort is required. This is specially felt at the immmigration and custom counters. How will Delhi handle these areas? A sleek airport would bring out the best out of airport staff initially but when the number of flights landing and taking off increase how will react to the pressure of handling multitudes of passengers? Will the airport amenities attract the same levels of attention ? Unless people are trained to be efficient and professional the old problems faced in other international airports of India would visit Delhi too!
