Cauvery panel passes the buck to SC

The Cauvery Monitoring Committee (CMC) on Thursday directed Karnataka to release 4.88 tmcft of water to Tamil Nadu over the next fortnight, even as it resolved to meet again on November 28.

TN’s demand for 52.5 tmcft of water, to make up for the deficit between June and September, was discussed inconclusively.

Meanwhile, the dispute between the states is coming up for hearing on November 26 in the Supreme Court.

The SC had directed CMC on October 30 to decide on TN’s plea for additional water to compensate deficit in water sharing after CMC rejected TN’s contention that Karnataka be asked to give 52.5 tmcft.
