Cauvery panel passes the buck to SC

The Cauvery Monitoring Co­mmittee (CMC) on Thu­r­sday directed Karnataka to release 4.88 tmcft of wa­ter to Tamil Nadu over the ne­xt fortnight, even as it re­s­o­l­ved to meet again on No­v­ember 28.

TN’s­ dema­nd for 52.5 tmcft of water, to make up for the deficit between June and Septe­m­b­er, was discussed inc­o­n­­c­l­u­si­vely.

Meanwhile, the dispute be­­t­­­w­een the states is co­m­i­ng up for hearing on No­v­e­m­ber 26 in the Sup­r­eme Co­u­rt.

The SC had directed CMC on October 30 to de­c­i­de on TN’s plea for ad­d­it­i­o­n­­al water to co­mpe­n­s­­a­te de­f­icit in wat­er sh­a­r­ing after CMC rej­e­c­ted TN’s co­nte­n­t­i­on that Ka­­rn­a­taka be ask­ed to give 52.5 tmcft.
