Cong comfortable with Sushma
The Congress managers are comfortable with Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha Sushma Swaraj and are not at all worried about the issue-based unity of Opposition members ahead of the Monsoon Session of Parliament beginning July 26.
“Sushmaji (Opposition leader Sushma Swaraj) is very cooperative and we don’t see any problem in transacting the business,” a UPA manager said here on Tuesday.
But the situation in the Rajya Sabha would be different because the Opposition there would be aggressive. Deputy leader of the BJP in the Rajya Sabha S.S. Ahluwalia would not miss any opportunity to fix the government, he said.
The Samajwadi Party, BSP and the RJD would continue to remain with the government. “They would criticise the government and may even join the Opposition on some issues but that will not pose any threat to us,” he said.
The SP, BSP and the RJD have been supporting the government from outside. They had helped it during the cut motions moved by the BJP and the Left in the Budget Session of Parliament.
As far as Ms Swaraj is concerned, she would play the role of “constructive opposition”, sources said, adding that the performance of Ms Swaraj and Leader of the Opposition in the Rajya Sabha Arun Jaitley would be under watch against the backdrop of the unity of anti-UPA parties.
The fuel price hike would certainly dominate the session after July 26. This is because the government has refused to role back the price while the Opposition is determined to compel it after receiving support from aam aadmi during the Bharat Bandh the other day.
The another issue is the civil liability for nuclear damage bill, 2010. It has virtually divided Parliament ideologically.
Prime Minister Manmohan Singh is said to be keen on its passage during the session but it will be interesting to see whether the Mandalite parties — SP, BSP, RJD — would change their stand on it and backs the government.

The leader of Opposition

The leader of Opposition should either make the government accountable for reining in inflation and corruption or give way to some other leader from Opposition benches. Of late we find that there is no one in opposition who is reminding the government that they promised to bring back ill-gotten money of corrupt Indians from Swiss banks within 100 days of coming to power. We urge leader of Opposition to make government fulfil its promise.
