India successfully test-fires Prithvi-II
India on Thursday successfully test-fired surface-to-surface Prithvi-II (P-II) missile from interim test range (ITR) at Chandipur in Orissa’s Balasore district, nearly 300 km from here.
Thursday’s test firing was fourth such exercise in the last eight months.
The surface-to-surface missile was fired from Launch Complex III at 9 am in Balasore district’s Chandipur.
Prithvi-II happens to be India’s first indigenously developed ballistic missile, with a range of 350 km and payload capacity of 500 kg.
The launch was carried out as part of the regular training exercise of the Armed Forces, sources in the defence establishment said.
“Prithvi-II reached the pre-defined target in the Bay of Bengal with a very high accuracy. All the radars, electro-optical systems located along the coast tracked and monitored the missile throughout the flight path. An Indian Naval ship located near the target witnessed the final event,” an ITR release said.
The entire launch operations of the missile were carried by the Armed Forces and monitored by the scientists of DRDO.
