Menon will hold talks in Beijing on July 3-6
National security adviser Shivshankar Menon will visit China for four days, from July 3 to 6, in his capacity as special envoy of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh. He will hold talks with state councillor Dai Bingguo, China’s special representative for the Sino-Indian boundary talks.
India and China have concluded 13 rounds of boundary talks, the last one being in New Delhi in August 2009 when Mr M.K. Naray-anan, now West Bengal governor, was the NSA. Mr Menon is also expected to meet other Chinese leaders. Chinese foreign ministry spokesman Qin Gang said on Thursday that the two sides would exchange views on bilateral relations and international and regional issues of common interest.
Mr Menon will leave Beijing the day Pakistan President Asif Ali Zardari arrives on a six-day visit. Islamabad is keen to firm up a nuclear deal with Beijing to set up two 650 MW reactors at Chashma in Paki-stan’s Punjab. India fears the deal could negatively impact the global non-proliferation regime. China has defended its nuclear cooperation with Pakistan, saying it “did not target a third country.”

It is a good move on the part of Prime Minister Mr Manmohan Singh to keep efforts to build a bridge of friendship with China, and thus frustrating to some extent the sinister designs of Pakistan to alienate India from China in totality. The frequent visits of ministerial and other govt levels could be useful in the long run. China's belligerancy is to be converted into a pact of lasting friendship. And this could be achieved by fostering people to people contacts at various social and intellectual meets between the great two nations. China is unpredictable but that should not deter us in making strong ties with the great nation.
