Pranab on Anderson: We’re trying
The Centre is making efforts to bring Mr Warren Anderson, the chief of Union Carbide Corporation at the time of the Bhopal gas disaster, to India following an uproar over his controversial departure from the country after the tragedy.
Union finance minister Pranab Mukherjee said as much in Kolkata on the sidelines of a programme of the Institute of Company Secretaries of India on Saturday. Asked whether the government has plans to extradite Mr Anderson from the United States, Mr Mukherjee said, “We are trying.” Meanwhile, the US on Saturday said any new request for the extradition of Mr Anderson would receive “fair consideration”. “We have an extradition treaty with India. And if India makes an extradition request to us, we will give it fair consideration,” US state department spokesman P.J. Crowley was quoted by PTI as saying. He said in response to a question that the US would “carefully evaluate” a fresh extradition request but that he would be unable to verify whether any new request had been received.
