Prediction of earthquake by astrologers creates panic in Assam

Panic gripped Assam following predictions by astrologers and fortune-tellers that a high magnitude earthquake was likely to hit the region on Wednesday.

The prediction of astrologers who also publishes almanac Kalpurush in Assamese was widely publicized by section of local news channels on its prime time show.

The astrologers claimed that there are possibilities of some diseases taking epidemic proportions, and that the region was bound to be hit by three major earthquakes, one of them was predicted on Wednesday.

Though, the specific time predicted by astrologers was 4 pm, which passed off, but hundreds of people came out on the streets.

Even many offices and schools were closed before their schedule time as a section of television media widely publicized the predictions of astrologers.

The fortune-tellers who claimed to have correctly predicted the earthquakes in the Northeast in past also said that it was the movement of planets that decides the earthquake.

The state administration, which claimed to have set up disaster management cell, remained a silent spectator to the rumor of tremor, which panicked the residents of the state.

Many old age resident of Guwahati were seen coming out of their houses with chairs and sitting on the street to avoid any eventuality in case of prediction coming true.
