RJD, 4 others derecognised by EC

Five political parties lost their status as state parties on Friday, according to the Election Commission. They are the Janata Dal (United), Samajwadi Party, Pattali Makkal Katchi, Marumalarch Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam and the Arunachal Congress Party. Mr Lalu Prasad Yadav’s Rashtriya Janata Dal lost its status as a national party following its poor performance in the last Jharkhand elections.

In the light of this development, these parties can retain their symbols, but become ineligible to use public broadcasters like All-India Radio and Doordarshan for poll-eve broadcasts. They also stand to lose free copies of electoral rolls.
For the RJD, coming as it does at a time when the party is gearing up to take on the Nitish-led government in the Assembly polls, the timing could not have been worse. The RJD is a recognised state party in the states of Manipur, Nagaland, Bihar and Jharkhand. But now it has been de-recognised in Jharkhand on account of its bad show in the last elections. To be a recognised as a national party, any party should be approved as a state party in at least four states.
The PMK lost its status in Puducherry, the MDMK in Tamil Nadu, the SP in Uttaranchal and Madhya Pradesh, JD(U) in Jharkhand and Arunachal Congress in Arunachal Pradesh.
Notices were earlier issued to seven parties by the Election Commission asking them why their recognition should not be withdrawn as they failed to fulfil the criteria to be called a state party. While the above six parties made their submissions, based on which the Election Commission acted, the Trinamul Congress and the JMM have sought more time to reply. Notices were served taking into account these parties’ performance in Lok Sabha and state Assembly elections since last year.
To be called a state party, the total number of valid votes polled by all candidates of a party in the last Lok Sabha or Assembly election should not be less than six per cent of the total votes polled.

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
