Suicide bid by major under probe by UN
An Indian Army major being probed for allegedly being seen with a sex-worker recently in Congo has attempted suicide by slashing his wrists, defence sources have confirmed. Sources said the officer is out of danger and is being treated in a hospital in the African nation.
The officer, who is part of the Army contingent on the UN peacekeeping mission in Congo, attempted suicide on July 12.
He was allegedly seen earlier in the company of a sex worker at a hotel on July 6. The incident was reported by a United Nations official following which both the UN and the Indian Army ordered a probe.
Defence sources said the enquiry is underway. The Indian Army major was accompanied by a Tunisian Army officer when he was allegedly spotted in the company of a sex-worker. Defence sources said the Major probably attempted suicide on account of the “embarrassment” caused to him.
Defence sources said the Army would carry out a thorough investigation in the case and said that if the allegations were proved to be correct and a breach in discipline confirmed, then prompt action against the officer would be taken.
This is the second time in the past few years when Indian Army personnel have been involved in controversy in Congo. About three years ago, the ministry of defence (MoD) and the Army had ordered a probe into allegations of sexual exploitation of locals in Congo including child abuse by some Indian Army personnel at a place called Masisi in Congo who were stationed in that country as UN peace-keepers. India is one of the largest contributors to UN peacekeeping missions world-wide.

A black mark on the honour of our armed forces. But then there are black sheep in the midst of other sheeps.
