Zardari has taken Sarabjit's case very seriously: Krishna
Pakistan President Asif Ali Zardari has taken 'very seriously' the case of Indian death row prisoner Sarabjit Singh, who has been in a jail for two decades, External Affairs Minister S.M. Krishna said.
Krishna raised 49-year-old Sarabjit's case with Zardari during a meeting here on Friday.
"The President has taken it very seriously and he instructed his office to look into the details," Krishna told Indian reporters during an interaction here on Saturday evening.
"Our approach is on a humanitarian basis, especially the fact that he has spent almost 20 years in a Pakistani jail," he said.
The Pakistan government will have to consider factors like Sarabjit's age and health while deciding on the issue, Krishna said.
Sarabjit was convicted for alleged involvement in a string of bombings in 1990 that killed 14 people.
His family says he is a farmer and the victim of mistaken identity.
Sarabjit's relatives said he strayed into Pakistan in an inebriated state three months after the bombings.
Following the intervention of the Pakistan People's Party-led government, Sarabjit's execution was put off indefinitely.
He is currently being held at Kot Lakhpat Jail in Lahore and recently submitted a fresh mercy petition to President Zardari.

India is reeling under

India is reeling under foreign policy debacle. Indian foreign Minister seems to be working to achieve something before the expiration of his tenure. It seems, the open visa is easier step. Pakistan wants her goods sold in India and Krishna not India, wants to show the world that congress after all has achieved something during his reign. However, time will tell us whether the move was a step in the right direction. It was a cricket policy then. Issuing visas for the citizens of a country, that spends her resource mainly to destabilize India, stabbing behind the back at will and living in a denial mode of all the crimes against India without any remorse or respect for the innocent lives lost in terrorists attacks. This is not an achievement, that can be reckoned. All the hype is merely for self satisfaction and not governs India's interests. India a country, willing to drift aimlessly, does not like rudders to guide her. If the Indian foreign Minister was a man of efficient, he would have resolved the fishermen's issue with Sri Lanka, which could be considered as a major achievement, and would have added a feather in the cap. he utters nothing about the issue. Everything is well in the Indian ocean and the attack on our fishermen by the Sri Lankan forces, have dwindled to a minimum, which is justifiable, so is the view of Krishna. The tragedies are manifold and are awaiting at the door step to unfold. Gujral did a wonderful job during his tenure as a foreign Minister. Krishna cannot even trod on his dust. India lacks men of resolve as leaders.
