Not a weighty issue anymore

The tinsel town beauties might go on raving about size zero, but surprisingly a lot many teenagers have grown out of their fixation with it. True that we keep hearing stories about celeb moms urging their teenaged daughters to mind the waistline. In fact a recent report said that Sridevi has been ushering her daughter to a strict diet regime in order to groom her as an actress! But teens today definitely have more sense than that, as the frenzy about losing weight quickly doesn’t seem an option any more.
For Adrija Datta, an engineering student it is all about going on diet for a few days. “It is kind of embarrassing when friends keep on noticing your weight. Every time they tell me I’ve put on weight, it gets me a little worked up. So, I have chalked out a diet plan for a few days. It is very difficult for me to stick to one for a long time,” says Adrija, who rules out any kind of extreme diet plan.
There are also some who are keen on maintaining a good fitness level. Apurva Dani, 17, a student and a professional Odissi dancer is very serious about what she eats. “It is very important for me to take care of my health and see to it that I don’t get tired easily as I want to make a career in classical dancing. And for that I have to be aware of such aspects of my body,” says Apurva.
The meaning of being fit and health conscious has undergone a vast change and teens are no more obsessed about crash diet plans. Seventeen-year-old Meha Kumar, a student of interior designing says, “It is scary to think that people are surviving on orange juices and salads. I am not too obsessed about diet plans but I make sure that I get a daily supply of necessary nutrients and eat everything in healthy proportions.”
Moreover, with parents around to guide and monitor, maintaining and sticking to a healthy diet plan becomes a whole lot easier as opposed to those who live away from home. Like Ridhima Misra says, “I end up eating almost anything because there aren’t too many options available in my hostel. Plus one also has studies and other activities to concentrate on. So it becomes difficult to focus too much on just your diet.”
For Sanchita Kumar it is all about enjoying life and being fit. She says, “Diet plans should be enjoyed and not cribbed about.”

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
