Groom given ‘poison’, dies
In a tragic incident, a young bridegroom died on the day of his wedding.
The marriage of Partha Mondal, 26, a resident of Hirapur in Asansol was fixed with a girl at Balitora village in Santuri police station area in Purulia district.
The wedding party from Asansol reached Balitora on Monday evening. As per the wedding ritual, Partha was welcomed with sweets. As soon as he ate a sweet, he fell sick with foaming in his mouth. He was immediately rushed to Barakar Nursing Home.
In the night when his condition deteriorated, he was shifted to Asansol’s HLG Hospital where he died in the early hours of Tuesday.
While Partha was battling for life in Asansol, in Purulia’s Balitora village another drama was unfolding. His father Bhootnath Mondal was confined in a room by the bride’s family members who wanted him to agree for the marriage of his second son Shyamal Mondal with her. However, when the news of Partha’s death reached the village, his distraught father and grief-stricken baraatis returned to Asansol. “My son was given poison in the sweets. He was killed,” Mr Mondal alleged.
Later the ADCP (central) of Asansol-Durgapur commissionerate Suresh Kumar Chardive said that the post-mortem report showed poison in the body. “We have alerted the Hirapur police station in Asansol and Santuri police station in Purulia,” he added.
