Woman, 31, gangraped
A woman was gangraped in the heart of Durgapur city in Burdwan district. The police has started an investigation but so far no one has been arrested. The incident once again raised questions about the safety of woman in the Asansol-Durgapur industrial belt.
According to additional deputy commissioner (east) of Asansol-Durgapur police commissionerate Sunil Yadav, the incident took place at around 12.30 am on Monday when a woman was forcibly dragged into the bush and gangraped by eight to 10 youth only minutes after she returned from Asansol in the car of the owner of the diagnostic centre where she worked. “She was dropped near Piali Kalim Mandir near City Centre where her husband had come to receive her (on his motorcycle).
The woman who is a resident of Bidhannagar in Durgapur went to answer the call of nature. Suddenly, two or three youth flashed a torch light on her face and even before she could run for cover 10 to 15 men pounced on her. They assaulted her and raped her,” Mr Yadav said.
Surprisingly, the members of gang were in the age group of nine to 25. While six to seven persons beat up her 58-year-old husband and pinned him down on the ground, the others took turns on the victim who is 31-year-old. The huge age difference between the two is due to the fact that victim is his second wife.
The police personnel of the City Centre outpost rushed to the spot as soon as they received the information of the heinous crime. But by then the rapists had fled from the scene.
The victim was sent for medical examination to Durgapur sub-divisional hospital after her FIR was registered by the police.
A police team led by Mr Yadav visited the scene of the crime. The police recovered a jeans which belonged to the victim. Mr Yadav said that it was being sent to the Central Forensic Science Laboratory for the test. “Two of the accused have been identified and we expect to arrest the culprits soon. The mobile of the lady which was snatched by the accused is also being tracked,” Mr Yadav added.
The police said that the statement of the victim, her husband and the doctor would also be recorded in the court under 164 CrPC.
