‘LED’ing the way!

My LCD TV is working just fine, but would you recommend that it’s time to upgrade to an LED TV?
Usha Mirchandani

An LED TV offers brighter pictures and a better contrast ratio. It’s slimmer, brighter and more detailed than a traditional LCD TV. However, if you possess a Full HD LCD TV — 1080p, we suggest that you hold on to it. LED TVs are still evolving, the prices are gradually falling and the features increasing. It would be prudent to wait till the prices and upgradation in LED technology stabilise.

What are the key specifications that I should look for in an LED TV?
Engees
Presently, there are three types of LED TVs available— Edge lit LED, local dimming LED and Full LED. The prices vary according to the features. Full LED falls in the high-end LED TV category. Look for an LED TV with local dimming, which will be able to dim the back-light in the dark portions of a movie, resulting in greater detail and contrast. The higher the refresh rate, the smoother the picture movement. LCD/LED TV manufacturers have made a big deal about refresh rates in the last couple of years, with the jump from 60Hz to 120Hz, and now 240Hz. Whether such high rates are a reality, is doubtful. According to reports, regardless of whether the HDTV in question used a 60Hz or 120Hz refresh rate, there was no visually-detectable difference in the motion blur performance.
