B’wood’s bare-devils
The Hindi film heroine has generally been synonymous with words like shy, modest and demure. But gone are those days. Today everyone is ready to lock lips on screen and get steamy for a lovemaking scene.
Nowadays, most debutantes will go to any lengths to play the part convincingly and do whatever the role demands. In fact, a lot of new girls are outshining each other in exposing onscreen.
Actor Anushka Sharma, who made her debut in Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi as a shy, demure girl, did a complete U-turn in her next film Badmash Company, where she was spotted in a yellow bikini. Jacqueline Fernandez, recently went all out in Murder2; Shazahn Padamsee, sported a bikini in Housefull2. Pakistani actor and reality star, Veena Malik has done a lot of bold shoots. And film Jism2 grabbed eyeballs with the Bollywood debutante, porn star Sunny Leone sporting the ‘nearly nothing’ look.
So while bold moves on screen may be signs of the changing times, there are many who are not too supportive of this new trend.
According to a media report, Bollywood actress Preity Zinta recently said, “I do not need to expose to show talent. Whatever I have achieved has been purely on talent.”
Bollywood actress Kirti Kulhari Bollywood actress believes, “Exposing is just another means of grabbing the audience’s attention. It is a mere replacement for a bad script.”
However, she adds, “Acting is about the character that you play in the film. So, if your role demands exposing and is an integral part of the film then exposing is fine.”
Sanjay Puran Singh Chauhan, film director and screenwriter thinks, “Exposure has always existed in films, but earlier it used to be the demand of the script, visualisation of the scene, and was highly aesthetically used — that too only when imperative, unlike today.”
“For most actresses and filmmakers, exposure is a good media gimmick and has become a shortcut for pulling in the audiences. So, the recent increase in exposure can be viewed as a mere case of demand and supply. You feed the masses with what sells more,” Chauhan adds.
“We are living in a modern world. Even the Ramayana and Mahabaharta saw women in semi-nude dresses, so the trend is fairly acceptable today if it goes with the character in the film,’’ she adds.
