Dial ‘d’ for digitisation
Cable TV and DTH services are speeding towards digitisation since TRAI (Telecom Regulatory Authority of India) has increased its pressure on the service providers to digitise their products. Finally this year, the I&B Ministry has set a deadline of March 31, 2015 for the shift from analog to digital systems. The current TV transmission in India is predominantly analog which does not allow any technological up gradation. Also, its quality is poor in comparison to digital transmission.
Analog transmission, being older technology, has plenty of drawbacks. In Analog, operators cannot offer selected channels of the subscriber’s choice. Hence, pay TV and other digital linked services cannot be provided. Digitisation leads to triple play where the customers get TV, broadband connection and telephone services from the same source. Digitisation will facilitate the cable operator to effectively compete with DTH and IPTV technologies. The shift will be executed in phases. In Phase I, the four metros of Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata and Chennai will shift to digital by March 31, 2012. Phase two will include 35 cities with a population of more than one million — Pune, Patna, Chandigarh etc by March 31, 2013. All urban areas by 2014, and rest of India by 2015.
What is difference between an LCD TV and an LED TV; and between Edge-lit LED and a Full LED TV?
An LCD TV uses fluorescent lamps for screen back lighting. An LED TV is an LCD TV with an array of fancy LED (light emitting diode) back-lights. Edge lighting is the placement of LEDs along the edges of an LCD display screen. Dispersion of the back-lighting is achieved by a highly reflective light plate which is mounted directly behind the display. Full LED TV means that a “full-array “of LEDs are arranged behind the entire LCD panel, not just along the edge. Full LED provides crystal-clear images, deeper blacks and the most realistic colours available today. This is a result of the LED array which automatically switches on or off simultaneously for optimised picture quality.
