Gay-friendly games trigger controversy
Parents fear that homosexual content in games will corrupt young minds whereas game developers feel otherwise
A Star Wars franchise game has caused controversy after it was revealed that the characters could have same-sex relationships. Some parents argue that kids will be exposed to a “corrupted way of thinking” through the game, while others admit that one can’t hide kids from homosexuality forever.
Games should not actually have sex or homosexual content which impact the societal values and there should be restriction in allowing kids to play these types of games, says L. Maruti Sanker, a game developer with 7Seas Entertainment Limited.
“These types of games should not be allowed to enter the market especially in India. Generally, playing these games diverts kids. Parents, gaming cafes should not allow children to play games which involve sex, or homosexual acts. Children should be explained how to differentiate between the good and bad,” says Sanker.
Some disagree with this and say that if some parents think they can prevent their children from being exposed to such issues, they are absolutely wrong as kids will eventually get to know through plenty of other sources. It finally boils down to parents and teachers acquainting young minds about sexuality.
“We need to educate children about sexuality in a more effective way and games are in fact the best way to impart important lessons in a playful manner. Games are a serious platform for communication. In the past year there were many online games on social issues and causes, which were accepted by almost everybody irrespective of age or sex which is a proof of the popularity of the medium,” explains Himanshu Himthani, who designed the Angry Anna game last year.
“I’m surprised to see a row over this. There are plenty of games overflowing with sex and violence (such as Grand Theft Auto) that seem to escape such debate because they carry an adult rating. And we all know that kids are playing them night and day. So this particular game should not be singled out. Whether it shows sex or homosexuality is immaterial in the present scenario,” says game developer Akshit Thakur.
New age parents accept that it’s difficult to keep a check on their kids’ activities, but it’s not impossible.
“If you have a problem with your kids playing such games then you should monitor their playtime. Don’t shy away from answering their queries. Let them know about the hazards of indulging in risky behaviour,” suggests student counsellor Prashant Mehra.
