Tactile thoughts
In its recent show entitled Tactile at Latitude 28, there is an attempt to go beyond the visual, through non conventional mediums so that other senses are also invoked while experiencing the art product. However, this is something that many other artists and shows have been exploring.
All good art, new mediatic or otherwise, has the ability to evoke a complete sensory experience in the viewer. Tactility does depend on the success of the artist in doing so, and not merely on media and material. This particular show tries to fixate on ‘tactility, media and material ranging from traditional watercolours to fishnet panties and bric-a-brac to evoke their tactile nature as a sentiment, a mood or an emotion that registers on the visual realm.’
The bridal like dress by Anolie Perera made up of safety pins, cloth and a tailors dummy, is actually called The Shroud for a Lost Mother and is one of the most arresting works on display. A shimmering translucent surface is draped over a feminine shape, the pins signifying a woman’s ability to bear pain, mend physical and social fabrics, and don multiple roles simultaneously within an exploitative space.
Benitha Perciyal invokes natural forms of seeds, trees, trunks and other vegetational/ organic being in her works made up of bark, seeds, natural flu on booking ford that give her works a certain three dimensionality. There is an attempt to recreate the natural through art, and while the technique may be new, the concept is certainly as old as art itself.
On the other hand Mohammad Zeeshan uses laser scoring on paper to create his forms such as Andy Warhol’s Marilyn Monroe. Here the original photograph on which Warhol based his pop art series itself becomes the referral image and the dialogic is more with the history of this image rather than with the media and the materials. Similarly, Mohammad Wahiduzzaman uses the figures of Mahatma Gandhi and Lata Mageshkar, though here other motifs and images that subvert the notion of iconic and heroic have been added.
