What is SEO?

Whenever you enter your query on a search engine like Google, a list of websites spring up in response. However, the order in which they appear may not be quite as random as they seem. In fact, there is an entire process that denotes which website is going to dominate the list and vice versa.

This process is called Search Engine Optimisation, commonly known as SEO. It’s a technical tool that improves the visibility of a particular website in a search engine’s results. The more frequently a site appears on the list, the more visitors it will receive.
In the recent years, several organisations have made a beeline for “experts” that promise to make their site more visible through SEO. However, tech gurus insist that these “experts” should not be trusted as this is not something people outside Google can get to the bottom of. “If everybody knew how SEO works they would be number one on the list, wouldn’t they?” points out technology expert Vijay Mukhi. “A lot of people who claim that they understand the process don’t because Google wouldn’t want to make that knowledge public. But from the little that they have made known is that, the visibility of a website depends on how many people have linked to that website. In other words, this means how many web pages have mentioned that particular website. The more people link to you, the more popular you get. So the power lies in the hands of the users,” Vijay says.
He goes to share an interesting anecdote. “A couple of years ago there was a controversy reported in the New York Times about a person selling inferior quality eye glasses on eBay. Soon people began talking about him making him the most discussed person online. So much so, that when people used to search for ‘eye glasses’ his name would pop up right on top. And he was of course thrilled by the visibility. That’s when Google added one more dimension based on the manner the subject was discussed making SEO more reliable than it was until then.”
So beware the next time you put your money on an SEO expert as now we know the trick is a well-kept secret — a query that even Google won’t answer.

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
