Kin blames cops for inmate death
A few days before Md Farook Md Yusuf Pawale (50), a 1993 Mumbai blasts convict serving life term in Yerwada jail died of a heart attack, his family’s lawyer had written a letter to the inspector general of prisons stating that the police shall be responsible if anything happens to him due to inadequate medical treatment. Pawale eventually passed away on Tuesday evening.
State additional director general of police (prisons), Meeran Borwankar said, “An inquiry is going on. In every such case an inquiry is ordered to find out if any violation of rules have occurred.”
Mr Pawale was admitted to the hospital on August 23, but allegedly his family wasn’t informed of his health for days. On August 28, with the help of their lawyer Farhana Shah, they were able to catch a glimpse of him.
“It was just a formality. They were allowed to see him for five minutes. They had handcuffed him to the bed. On the family’s insistence, I had written a letter to the IG,” said Ms Shah.
According to the police, Pawale was being treated for pulmonary hypertension and asthma.
