Spielberg flouts boat rule, fined
Hollywood billionaire director Steven Spielberg excused himself and paid a fine after he was cited for violating boating rules while on vacation on the Italian island of Sardinia.
The director of Jaws and ET earlier in July was fined 151 euros by the Italian coastguard after angry vacationers complained that his motor skiff put swimmers in danger by coming too close to the beach, according to Italian newspaper Corriere della Sera.
Spielberg who was on holiday with friends was dropped off by his crew near Porto Liscia when he was approached by authorities who didn’t recognise him.
“I’m Spielberg. Excuse me. I didn’t know it was forbidden. You’re correct and it’s right that I should pay,” he said.
Coast guard commander Vincenzo Petrella said the fine was, “for using his engine within 300 metres of the coast, instead of rowing.”
