Phelps swims to medley gold

Michael Phelps wrapped up the Charlotte UltraSwim meet on Sunday by winning the 200-metre individual medley as he managed to hold off Eric Shanteau at the Mecklenburg Aquatic Centre.

It was a mixed weekend for Phelps who swam in four events and was scratched in one before losing Saturday’s premier 100 metre backstroke event to Nicholas Thoman.
“I wanted to separate myself from Eric in that first 100 metres,” said Phelps.
“We were going to see where we were in terms of fitness right there, and we found out in the first 25 metres.
“This weekend gives me motivation, more than anything. The weekend was not great, not terrible. I’ll be the first to admit my training isn’t where it should be.”
Emily Brunemann won the women’s 1,500m long-course freestyle, topping Olympian Chloe Sutton by six seconds with a swim nearly 12 seconds faster than her seed time.
Josef Kinderwater won the 800m freestyle in eight minutes, 12.46 seconds and Peter Vanderkaay won two individual events and earned $20,000 in prize money for winning the USA Swimming Grand Prix Series title.
Vanderkaay also competed on a relay winner and finished second twice.
In the women’s 200 metre individual medley, Justine Mueller edged Dagny Knutson and 15-year-old Missy Franklin beat Elizabeth Beisel in the 200 metre backstroke. — AFP

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
