An 18-year-old dalit girl, who was gangraped twice in the last three years, is now staring at her death, thanks to apathy of the state police officials who did not care for safety and allowed the perpetrators to inflict such irreparable damage to her.
According to sources, two girls of Arjunagoda village under Pipili police station, just 30 km from here, were gangraped by a group of youth in 2008 when they were returning home after attending their nature’s call.
A few days later, one of the victims committed suicide. However, a determined surviving victim decided to stand and fight the case in the court to punish the culprits. She lodged a case in the local police station. Based on her complaint, two of the accused — Guna Chnandra Swain and Premananda Nayak — were arrested.
The accused later managed to get bail from the Orissa high court. After their release, they threatened the rape victim to withdraw the case or face the consequences. Although the victim sought security, her plea was allegedly ignored.
Little did the rape victim know the accused were nursing a grudge against her.
On the morning of November 28, 2011, the accused once again forcibly picked up her when she was returning home after taking bath in a local pond. They raped her repeatedly and then tried to kill her by strangulation.
Thinking that the victim died, the accused threw her in a paddy field and then fled. Seriously injured, the victim was admitted to local hospital by her poor parents. Although the local doctor referred her to visit SCB Medical College, they expressed their inability to afford for her medical expenses. As her condition deteriorated, the victim’s parents finally admitted to SCB Medical College on Friday.
According to the victim’s father, the hospital authorities on Sunday discharged his daughter saying that there was lean chance of her survival.
When contacted, Pipill police inspector Amulya Chamaptiray said since the accused was in coma and could not name the perpetrators of the crime, the accused could not be arrested.
