I want to become a computer engineer. I have already completed my Diploma and now want to continue my Bachelor in Engineering. However, the problem is that my parents are not allowing me to study further. I am from Rajasthan and most of the people here are not really interested in higher studies. My dad also feels the same. He doesn’t want me to work. Since I love him a lot, I don’t want to go against him. What should I do?

A. I understand your situation. In many ways people around us don’t understand our dreams and ambition. It happens to a lot of kids in many families and nobody means harm but there is a clash of opinions on matters like this. Many times we tend to get affected or upset or angry and don’t end up communicating the way we should to make others understand what we want from our lives. I agree that your parents have the best interest at heart and I’m happy to hear that what they think matters to you but you have to live your life and if you are unhappy you will carry that feeling into other areas of your life. If you think that you must study, then convince your parents. You know them well. Tell them what this means to you. Yes, they may be upset at first but they may understand. After all you are their daughter.
I am a 21-year-old woman pursuing engineering final year. My parents are so strict that they don’t even allow me to take my decisions. I am very upset because of this. Sometimes, it irks me so much that I become rude to them. I have lost interest in life. My parents are over-protective about me, which I don’t like at all. A. My dear, I’m sure the intent of parents being so protective of their kids is because they believe that if things go a certain way you will lead your life in a successful way. But you have to find a way to communicate with them. Get your friends to speak with them. Tell them that you wish to grow and breathe and become independent slowly, to go out and achieve and take risks. Tell them you are ready for it and will make them proud and live upto it and I’m sure they will agree. All the best.
