Sense of style is often ruled by the designer labels you wear these days. And fashion has taken an altogether different meaning in a world of labels. There was a time when celebrities dictated the fashion styles among the youth and set their trends but over the years the definition has changed and teens are on a lookout to explore something new and comfortable. Fashion magazines, blogs and websites too advise teens to develop their own style.
Divya Aiyer, third year mass media student feels it’s high time teens stopped emulating actors. “On screen they come across very beautiful and gorgeous but that happens because it’s their job to look glamorous. And it requires high maintenance with all the grooming, as they need to maintain a public image. For me it’s just about a next-door girl and not bother too much about looks,” says Aiyer whose style mostly involves kurti jeans and tees.
Developing one’s style is not as simple as fashion pundits say. Swatimala Basu, a final year engineering student often rues about the one particular sense of style that dictates the market. Since her built is large, she finds it difficult to find clothes of her size in the first place. “Secondly comfort factor over rules any other aspect while shopping for clothes. Why kill yourself to look good? Isn’t it a sign of low self-confidence to wear something that uncomfortable just because ‘it is in’ and apparently it makes you look good?” questions Basu.
Nikasha Tawadey, a well-known fashion designer believes that it is all about individuality and finding the right ways to go about it. “What is the point in wearing the clichéd designs and those bandage dresses when everyone across the world is wearing them? Indian aesthetics are some of the most revered aspects in fashion across the world and could actually do wonders with Indian designs,” says Tawadey. She often keeps individuals in mind while designing and their mindset. “It is important to know one’s mind and be clear about the kind of personality you have,” adds Tawadey.
Nandita Bose, student of commerce says, “My sense of style is relaxed, I wear what appeals to me and what looks good on me. Among the celeb brigade, I only took a fancy to Vidya Balan’s outfits in Paa.”
