Himalayan paradise

Some 30 kilometres beyond Almora in the Kumaon region lies the picture-perfect township of Binsar. Most people from Delhi give Binsar a miss, choosing to go to the more popular and populous towns of Mussoorie or even Shimla when they have a few days off. The result is that Binsar is unspoilt and uncluttered, making it the ideal getaway for someone who wants a bit of peace and quiet away from the frenzy of city life.

Former capital of the Chand Rajas, besides being an ornithologist’s paradise, Binsar provides the visitor magnificent views of the Himalayas. Soak in the beauty of snow-capped peaks, exotic ferns, lush moss and alpine flowers in a myriad colours — if there was a heaven on earth surely it would be here!
Walk through forests of Himalayan oak and marvel at the rhododendron that comes in a variety of shades ranging from deep purple to pillar-box red. Ride, trek, camp or birdwatch — it’s all on offer here.
The Binsar Valley Resort where most people generally stay is perched romantically on top of a hill. Wake up leisurely before you set forth on a jeep safari or even a horse safari — both of which are good ways of seeing the place and its surrounds. Spend the night at a campsite and soak in what the area has to offer. Ask the resort to organise either of the two trips for you if you are interested.
If you’re a walker there are plenty of trekking trails to choose from. Binsar is a notified forest reserve and bird sanctuary, just up a birdwatcher’s alley. The adventurous could take a ride to Baageshwar — a beautifully scenic township at the end of the River Saryu, where the Gomti and the Saryu meet. Watch the dusk envelop the mountains and enjoy the views.
Temples abound in the area, so if you have the inclination there are several wonderful shrines you could visit. The Jageshwar temple complex, about 64 km from Binsar, is an important Shivite shrine. Built between the 8th and 14th centuries the temple complex which houses about 124 shrines and several statues is known for its exquisite craftsmanship.
And if you don’t feel like rushing around, just sit back, relax, look at the spectacular views and enjoy a pre-dinner drink. After all, you’re here to unwind and what better way than to do it tranquil surroundings?

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
