Pratigya is sullen and annoying

PRATIG~1.JPG

It is true, you know, that love happens at first sight. Loathing, too. Aur mere saath toh this happens aksar, when new-new TV shows arrive. There are certain shows which everyone talks about, and yet every time I sit down to watch them, I want to get my underarms waxed.

I tried again. Pratigya (Star Plus). It seemed like a happy day. IG Mathur’s chickna puttar Aman was getting engaged to professor Saxena’s daughter Aarushi. All the ugly people of the Saxena family had gathered — father, his daughters, son and bahu, but then arrived the volatile and hairy Thakur parivar, with band-baja. Excited, Thakur Sajjan Singh clapped and produced a large item girl who did danci-danci on Munni-badnam-Jhandu-balm.
Tight-tight IG, instead of joining the dance, started shouting. OK, so Thakur didn’t get Mallaikaji, but he did get one Mink and at least size main toh she was equal to two Mallaikas. I really didn’t understand what the IG’s problem was.
Anyway, tight IG announced that no Thakur will be present at the soon-to-be-held Mathur-Saxena shaadi. In turn, Thakur told IG Mathur that it was his small beta Jai who rammed into Aadarsh and fled. Tension hogi, fights hongi, IG ki moonch neeche hogi. But I really don’t care.
My first problem with this show is that Pratigya is one sullen chick. The second is its completely idiotic story. Why must a brother and sister get married to another set of brother-sister for revenge. Arre, surely there are other, less self-loathing revenge techniques. And in any case, whatever may be the gender politics and literacy level of the Thakur parivar, the fact is that Krishna is always very nice to simpering Pratigya and she is just so dull and annoying. My armpit hair? It’s gone.

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
